Format and Narrative Report

Homework Week 2: Format and Narrative Report script

 Single camera Techniques:

From the year 2000 Single shot camera has been used!!!

single-camera technique is shooting a movie using one camera instead of multipule of cameras.
Also the name gives you a  detailed insight to what a single camera shot technique is. So each single shot taken from the various camera angles is taken using the same camera, which is moved around the set during filming in order to reset a shot to get each shot or new angle in place.

The advantages of single camera shot

    •    They are low budget films and usually it requires a lot of editing during scenes. For example: during a scene with multiple characters having a conversation.
    •    It's cheaper as you only need to get one camera for shooting hence the name, single camera shot technique.
    •    You don’t have to worry about a camera being picked up on another camera because only one camera is being used for either your music video or film.
    •    Since its single camera it means your able to observe all the work as you go carefully as your not worried about another camera.

  • More portable.
  • You can be more creative.
  • To create a sense of realism.
  • It allows you to follow a story board.

The disadvantages of single camera shot

    •    You are limited to what you can and can't do while filming as you will only be able to                 take the single shot.
    •    All the equipment has to be in one place so it will take time to move set.

    •    The use of single camera techniques takes longer to edit, as there are a load of shots gathered from recording.
    •    The camera must keep changing angles when shooting, so they can capture the full scene e.g. long shot, close up, mid shot, to show audiences what characters are feeling or to understand whats happening or whats going to happen.

Multi-camera shot

Multi - camera shot is when you have more than one camera be used in a scene, they would use about 3-4 cameras on set because they are recording live and i'm sure they wouldn't wont to record it again. each of the cameras being used on set is allocated a set camera angle also multi-camera shot for live audiences shows, soaps, and chat shows. They use this camera technique because it makes the editing process easier as all shots are in order.

The advantages of multi-camera shot

  • It is efficient as it saves time in the editing process.
  • It is consistent.

Disadvantages of multi-camera shot

    •    It is expensive as you would be needing 3-4 cameras on set which will cost alot when one camera costs like 859.99 pounds and on top of that a bigger production team will be needed as you have more cameras so more editing will be needed too.

examples of Single-camera shot & Multi-camera shot

Programs that use single camera technique set up:

  • Outnumbered

  • peep show

  • scrubs

  • sky fall

  • Come fly with me

  • Utopia

  •  Doctor Who

  • Skins

    •  How I met your mother

Programs that use Multi camera technique set up:

  • Friends

  • Big bang theory

  • X-factor

  • Eastenders

  • Jeremy Kyle

  • BBC Glastonbury

  • Graham Norton

     180 Degree Rule:

When filming you shouldn't cross the line of the 180 degree rule called the line of action this is a invisible line that has been placed deliberately in the middle of characters. The 180 Degree Rule implies that two characters in a scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If you don't follow the 180 Degree Rule, it disrupts the scene which means it disorientates the audience while the film story is distorting. When you break the 180 line, a person who was originally facing left in a scene is all of a sudden facing the right.

 Genres:

genres is the categories of which film types are placed in so people can understand what is going on or even whats coming.
Examples are:
  • Action
  • Adventure
  • Comedy
  • Crime
  • Fantasy
  • Historical
  • Horror
  • Thriller
  • Mysteery
  • Sci - fi
  • Romance

Part B

Formats:

  • Serial:

Serial drama follows the main story through out the entire TV season/ series. A example portraying this would be soap operas since it is the most common form of serial drama.

  • Series:

A series is a sequence/number of TV shows coming one after the other some usually have the re-occurring characters.

  • Single - Drama:

A single drama is broadcasted once (so a on off) as it provides a realistic presentation or its often based on real life or conversable topics.

Part C

Narrative Structure:

  •  Linear Narrative:

This is when the story line has a set order to so it consists of a beginning a middle, and a end.

    • Non - Linear:

Non linear is known to be the complete opposite to linear as they just added non but it uses flashbacks, rewinds, re - plays,  and it has no specific chronological order like (Linear narrative). because its non linear it doesn't have a ending to it, implying that that films would be left on a cliff hanger making audiences crave/thirsty for more.

  • Episodic Narrative:

Is a story that is told through a series of episodes, or parts. For instance A soap opera on TV is an episodic program.

  • Open and Closed Narrative:

Open narratives usually consist in having a loads of character and a non foreseeable ending. A good example of this is soap operas like Eastenders and Hollyoaks. Another example of open narrative is how on Christmas day programs are shown as a reference to all the events happening in the world all around the world such as 'love actually' the film.

A closed narrative is when all the questions raised in the film are answered. They also supply explanations and once you have set your story script/storyboard there is no alternative ending it basically follows the script.

  • Realist And Anti - Realist:

Realist narrative: A advert that can be seen as real life or a otcome that could really happen.

This advert is realist because it portrays ways in which kids get dirty and these things happen in everyday life, it also shows how mums (hero) getting the stains out of their clothes (making the stain remove implying mums are the heros). So i conclude with this advert being a realist narrative as it could happen in real life as this is a everyday issue.

Anti-realist narrative: A advert that isn’t real so anything can happen in the advert such as cartoon characters and and aliens with big spaceships.

This advert is Anti-realist because in the avert it has two sweets conducting a conversation in  which we know would never happen so its not real. This advert is good because it will make people laugh (target audience) so more people will remember it and talk about the advert to others and most importantly buy the product as it is the main character in the video. Anti-realist can use humor as a tool to engage and to draw views in to view their product as it's unrealistic which can make it funny.

  • Multi - Stranded:

This is when you tell a story from more than one person's point of view. or two stories of two different people that intervene.

The advantages of multi - stranded narratives is that is allows audiences to view both sides/views of a story to get a better understanding of whats going on, but the disadvantage is that views can be one sided (biased) which implies that the audience is given the opportunity to favor one character and their view.

An example of Multi - stranded is NCIS ( Naval Criminal Investigation Service): because it shows plots from different characters involved (each characters point of view).

  1. I will give more detailed feedback, however paragraph 1 is taken from here:

and has been slightly ammended - this is plagiarism and does not provide evidence of your understanding. It will need to be rewritten using your class notes and your own words and sentences
