  1. P1, M1, D1
Merit Your Techniques Portfolio is Detailed and thorough - your techniques portfolio is complete and explains the techniques giving examples and discusses how they have developed from the Early pioneers. (M/D)
Your timeline explains the development of film editing referring to examples of films and filmmakers across the Early and Modern periods and at times explains their purpose behind using these techniques. There is a relevant discussion of how one was influenced or developed the use of the technique contextualised within the principles of special effects, continuity, soviet montage, and new wave. You explain the use of these techniques in contemporary examples. (M)
Section 1 Video guide detailed examples using titles and discusses development of techniques and explains their purposes and usage. Some inaccuracies that Hitchcock used Jump Cuts in Rope? Incorrect – does not understand Hitch using in cam edits. There is some comparison with contemporary examples. Text with video – ie Montage - does not always match. Section on analogue film editing has some detail and refers to examples such as the Hulk. There is argument presented here to generate a high Merit borderline D with greater argument.
P2, M2, D2 Pass Most steps have been followed to a standard approaching professional practice working independently within a realistic time constraint. The screen grabs of digitising footage into 3 bins per scene, logging the clips, reviewing the rushes. The preparation is mostly complete, however the lack of a Final Cut generated EDL or editors log to demonstrate competence to a Merit level of understanding why preparation for editing is necessary.
P3, M3, D3 Merit The thriller narrative sequence has been edited to produce a preliminary rough cut, then a highly proficient 5 minute short film. Sound has been added suited to genre but only partly scored to the images (dramatic over tying laces?) Ring a roses is inappropriate – horror when brief is thriller. Lacks foley and ambience but has later for the twist. Continuity flows very well and has sophistication match on actions etc and the narrative is clear. Effects used unnecessarily. Some effective control over pace and rhythm. Merit/Distinction border. The edit was completed to a realistic timescale under controlled conditions and you worked in a manner approaching professional standards.
