Unit 1:preproduction report (your individual 1 minute short film idea) Neat

Unit 1: Pre-production report (Individual 1 minute short film idea)
Introduction:

In this report I will be talking about my individual short film that I will be making which is called let’s play which is about a group of friends living an ordinary life but are unaware of the misfortunes going on all around them. Such as mysterious captures leading to torture then death. This leads to an unknown character capturing the three friends and making one of them choose which one to save and the other to die an unfortunate death. (It was inspired by saw, scream, and the purge but mostly inspired by saw the movie as it caught my eye). My role as the production manager Is to insure that good and services are produced efficiently so that I make sure my short film can enter a short film festival and so that it can be uploaded to YouTube.

Types of production:

I had to choose a genre that captures my idea and that is preferred by my target audience, my short film Let’s Play is fitted in the genre horror as the stylistics of a horror. It requires a small crew of three people for the short film to be functional as we will split the roles equally between us such as director, producer/production manager and production manager assistant. A script will be produced by the director showing all shot types, actions and dialogues. The scheduling and the organising for my short film will be taken care of by, producer/production manager and production manager assistant but the work will be split evenly between the two. The work that would be split between the two production managers is that of story boarding and locations.

Finance:

The first requirement is the budget costs which consist of paying for transport, camera equipment, camera crew, talent, and the editing suite. The equipment is borrowed from our college which is Christ the king Sidcup which means that we don't have to spend any money. We also have access to the editing suite for which we will use to add dramatic effects to our short films. The type of production we will be using is single camera production. There are many ways to go out to get money. A ways is through dipping into their own savings; this benefits them in the long term if they produce a massive film that’s loved which would allow a large profit margin. Another way is through investors investigating money in which they borrow you money but when you start making a lot they get half there cut or what they paid you to start up. I don’t think I wouldn't need to provide a great sum of money because most of the materials that I will be using will be provided by my college to be honest. My only input in money would be to provide food for my actors and this will come out of my personal savings. The transport is already established because I and my actors all have the free travel oyster cards (access to trains & buses) and we have cars too which sorts out transportation. Or I can use Kick starter- which is known to be the largest funding platforms for creative projects, it helps artists find the necessary resources and support needed to make their idea come to life.

Budget Requirements: The costs to everything I will be using for my short film will be portrayed below:

Cameras - I will be using a camera no much more than £100-£300. I have to purchase one camera as imp using a single camera to shoot my 1 min short film. However in this situation I will be able to access a camera for free from college.

Tripod: this is needed as my short film is going to be a static one meaning it has to use a tripod to show realism and professionalism which is expected at this stage in time.  The price ranges from £29.00 -£259.00 depending on how much you are going to spend depending on the quality you wat your work which is show in the image below.

Lights and microphone - if I were to hire the cost would be £500 per day to hire a camera man who would sometimes bring their own equipment and sometimes not. In this case I wouldn't be needing to hire anyone because I will be shooting my 1min short film myself and with my group.
Editing Suites - These suits can cost £500 per day/hour but in this case I will be using the editing suite that is provided in college which also has the specific resources needed in completing my task. I will be using my editing suite in my college as it is free and because we have been granted access to do so to make things easier for us.

Talent - the talent will cost £500-700, however I will be using my colleagues as it’s a short film and I have people around with their own associated talent at my disposal to use and they won't ask for any pay as they are friends.

Crew - In order to hire a crew for my 1 min short film it would usually cost more like£50 and up. For my 1 min short film I will only need to utilise a minimal amount of people as I want to be able to create a short realistic idea that I can actually create instead of making.
Transport – is already sorted as we are all students so we have access to TFL (transport for London) free Oster (bus, train) so each person would need £10 each for train as you are charged. Are second means of transport is that we have cars at our disposal (parent driving us around).

Facility hire - hiring an edit suit to have videos edited will cost around £550 per day. In this case I will be using my college-editing suit for free (mac room) where again I have all the needed resources to edit my short film. I will be using final cut pro x which is an editing software that will allow me to edit my short film together so it makes sense and so that it portrays a sense of realism. We are lucky to have an editing suit because we would have had to pay £550

Time:
Our deadlines are very important to us as timing gets us prepared and organised In order to achieve the objectives set, I must organise a timetable in advance and inform my crew so that they know when to attend. This will be done using call sheets which are schedules which tell the filmmakers when they should be filming and the location they should be filming in. According to post-production, the date will be organised and everyone will need to be early so that we can make changes to the footage and simultaneously working at a moderate pace. It would normally cost £550 for editing in the editing suite or studio. However, we are using the apple Mac suit in my college to edit our footage meaning that we don't have to pay a thing which entails that we are lucky as we are using equipment for free without charge. The procedures – an EDL (edit decision list) would be need later on when editing for the soul purpose of arranging the camera shots into folders of good and bad shoots too make work easy to access and so that it can be more organised.

Crew and Personnel:
The production roles that are needed for my 1 minute short film is that of:
·         Director – script, location recce, props
·         Production manager -
·         Camera man/camera Director -
According to the size of my team, there will be a maximum of three people and they will have their own production roles which consist of the director, producer, and the production assistant but each person in our group will support roles others in the form of assistants.

Facilities and Equipment:

In the film industry you would have to pay in order to transport your equipment it would cost around £1350 if you paid for bikes and taxis as a form of transport for your equipment (recording equipment, crew). However, we will be using public transport as it is free as long as we have our oyster cards.
The props I will be using for my short film is a mask, someone's wallet showing ID. It usually costs around £500 for props but I already have some of the props needed for my short film, I will be spending money on props such as fake blood, face paint, bed sheets toy tricycle and scary doll. I plan to finish my project before the deadline so we can use the time to deal with the placing of footage in the editing suite.

Materials:

We will be using royalty-free music for our short film. In the industry you would have to pay clearance which involves paying money to whoever owns the song, but we will be using royalty-free music. This is easier as you don’t have to undergo the process of having to get permission by contacting the creator of the work you want to borrow. As if this isn't done you can be fined a nice amount of money for stealing someone’s property/work. I would have to acquire clearance, in which is the paying for copyrighted materials to use at my disposal e.g. music tracks, sounds and expressions.
Copyright is a very important law in the world of media as copy right laws prevent people from stealing your hard work so basically you are given ownership over t things you created. For example if it was a painting, a photograph, a poem or a novel, music video, e-portfolio, short film if you created it, you own it (belongs to you) and it’s the copyright law itself that assures that ownership hence it means people will need to ask for permission to use you work when the copy right laws have been enforced.
To be honest this is essential for my short film as it makes sure that no one can steal my uniqueness and creativeness. If someone does while the copy right law has been enforced that person would have to pay for copyright hence they could go jail or be fined a lot of $$$.
The cost of copy right law is=$114 in pounds= £75.28 or even more (depending).

Contributors:
Talent - the talent will cost £500-700, however I will be using my colleagues as it’s a short film and I have people around with their own associated talent at my disposal to use and they won't ask for any pay as they are friends.

Locations:

We will have 4 locations in total, 2 to be the actual locations and the other 2 to be there for back up in case of a serious situation to shoot my 1 minute short film. The locations will be sourced from doing a recce which is a quick review of the location and pictures (selfies to show proof of our findings) are taken and permission is required in order to film on that location. So in summary, the costs are covered by the group so a team effort (contributing to the location if we have to pay) but its most unlikely as all we need to do is state that we are students and that we want to shoot in a certain location.

Codes of Practice and Regulations:

The BBFC is the British board of film classification. They are a non-profit organisation and they certify films shown in the UK with age ratings e.g. U, PG, 12, 12A, 15, 18 & R18. They do not regulate YouTube because it is worldwide and it is not just limited to the UK.

Conclusion:
The priorities for my 1 minute short film is that a storyboard, script, script lining, EDL, scheduling, risk assessment is all important as they are the things that make up my 1 minute short film without them I would not be able to shoot my short film as it is not safe also I would not be handed equipment as there is no proof of me apply work towards my short film.

proposal

rouge edit=

My idea was mainly influenced by SAW, as it was able to capture my eye as the essence of a horror story however there wear a few other movies that inspired me into doing my idea . such as the purge 1 and 2 and lastly scream both of these also played important roles in gaining my idea for my 1 min short film.
my short film plan Draft (proposal)

Films classified 12A and12 contain material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. Adults planning to take a child under 12 to view a 12A film should consider whether the film is suitable for that child. To help them decide, we recommend that they check the BBFC insight for that film in advance. Accompanied viewing cannot be enforced in the home, so the 12 certificate remains for DVD/Blu-ray, rather than the 12A. The 12 is also a simpler system for retailers. It means they cannot sell or rent the item unless the customer is over the age of 12.
film festival is an organised event, in which presentations of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Some festivals focus on a specific film-maker or genre or subject matter (e.g., horror or thriller film festivals). A number of film festivals specialise in short films of a defined maximum length.

The name of my short film horror is called : Lets play! (scratched in with kid writing)

my film proposal is that a boy is tide up drugged abused (hurt, roughed up, flogged, beat up and drudged) blood running down hes head and dripping from his/her mouth. sudden awakes gasping for air with a (staring with a) blurred vision then gets clearer as he looks around to notice he remembers nothing and is hurt and tied up until he look up and there sit two TV or just the one at first it is scrabbled then it becomes clear and voice start to protrude in the air "(first laughter evil to stimulate its a horror) then the TV shoes a masked figure saying LET'S PLAY A GAME THEN TV SCRAMBLES WHILE THE MASKED FIGURE IS LAUGHING. boy says no i wont play your game then the TV scrambles again showing the masked figure saying wrong answer. the boy/girl is scared (close up on eyes face) starting to fidget to escape from the ropes stopping her freedom. then the TV turns back on showing people the boy knows which allows him to have a flash back remembering the two people on screen making him start to cry saying in a low toned voice saying ill play your f***ing game. then it will cut there with a TV screen shut off with the masked figure laughing in the background.  then credits Will be shown.

WHAT ARE SHORT FILM FESTIVALS?

The intended purpose of this report is too sell off my pitch in order to win other the specific audience and to explore the idea to producers (entrepreneurs) to get the film made if its good. From my research gathered, i am able too see that horror short films don't amount too the amount of views of that received from a thriller short film. I was also able to acknowledge that females watch more horror/thriller movies than men because they like the suspense and the build up of tension more than men do.
Hook: boy/girl awakes unaware of her wear bouts drugged and abused as (bleeding)
Twist: boy/girl remembers flash back (restoring memories) making him change his mind to play it game

The BBFC won't regulate my web series as thy only regulate movies and cinematic shows and theatre shows.
My short film will be distributing or shown at a short film festival or it can also be viewed on Netflix.
short film festivals are where young artist go to share their art/talents in short film, by distributing their short films to be seen at the festival in which they choose the best one. The short films that strike all the marking criteria and shows artists understand the shot types and the point of a hook and a plot twist will get promoted in a particular area in the world (where the short film is being viewed)  and because of this the owner of that short film will achieve some reputation and praise (money or even a job to create awareness for them) and to show the world how creative they are and even help them find a place of work.

my short film is going to be distributed at  short films festival.

Film festivals:• Raindance Film Festival (Oscar qualifying)
short film festivals are where distributors go to look at short films and if they are impressed by any they can pick it up and promote it in their specific world geological area. Also gaining the maker some sort of reputation and Appleseed for their artistic work. Also my short film also can be shown on Netflix. What's the difference between 12A and 12?

if the BBFC (British bored of film classification) were to regulate my 1minute short film i think it would be 12A or a 12 as it's content might be inferior for this specific audience.

These are the three films that inspired me to engaging in my ideaa for my short film.

this film really helped me gather ideas for my short film as the content involved was so intriguing that it sparked something me to want to use some of the trends in the film to be inserted into my short film. 1 thing that i loved about the film saw is that its hooks and twists are so sharp that you would never see them coming and never would of predicted the out come of whats going to happen. it follows a non-linear narrative as there are flash backs to scenes to show characters piecing together the situation. it also built so my suspense and tension for me as the antagonist makes the protagonists killed them selves in which it's an irony as saw is being called a serial killer without actually killing (he gives people the choice to live or die for reasons given). lastly this film horror suits its genre as conventions are shown :gory, nudity, violence. however my film is for a lower target audience so my horror is going to be suited to their type of scares not too exploratory as this film.

this film also grabbed my attention as the make up and equipments and dressing was great to the extent that wanted me to use in my 1 min short film. the masked really was the centre of my focus as the masked did not allow people to show there expressions (disallowing us to see their real self and feelings towards what they are doing) however the mask have set expression on them which stir emotions. i think its also good as it is going to suit my specific audience as dolls, masks, clowns are perceived as scary creatures to them.

this film also caught my attention because of the mask and how this is like a game. once again the mask is used to cover up identity and to foreshadow fear into the eyes of the viewer also another selling point for me was the voice of the character playing the masked man as it was scary and freaky.

what i thought these films had in common is that they can all be linked to a game as in saw he wants you to play his game to kill or be killed which is technically the same for the purge as you get a whole day to cleanse the world of the lower class peoples and the sick to reduce the over growing population. and lastly scream as a man messing with a girls past i think is being precievied as a game.
