Unit 1: preproducton
report (indivuidual
1 minute short film idea)
Introduction:
In this report I will be talking about my indivuidual short film
that I will be making which is called let’s play which is about a group of
friends living an ordinary life but are unaware of the mistfortunes going on all around them. Such
as muysterious
captures leading to torture then death. Which leads to an unknown character
capturing the three friends and making one of them choose which one to save and
the other to die an unfortunate death. (It was ispired by saw, scream, and the purge but mostly ispired by saw the movie
as it caught my eye). My role as the producton manager Is to insure that good and services are
produced efficiently so that I make sure my short film can enter a short film
festival and so that it can be uploaded to youtube.
Types of production:
I had to choose a genre that captures my idea and that is
preferred by my target audience, my short film Let’s Play is fitted in the
genre horror as the stylistics of a horrror. It requires a small crew of three people for the short
film to be functional as we will split the roles equally between us such as
director, producer/production manager and production manager assistant. A
script will be produced by the director showing all shot types, actions and
dialogues. The scheduling and the organising for my short film will be taken
care of by, producer/production manager and production manager assistant but
the work will be split evenly between the two. The work that would be split
between the two production managers is that of story boarding and locations.
Finance:
The
first requerement
is the budget costs which consists of paying for transport, camera equipment,
camera crew, talent, and the editing suite. The equipment is borrowed from our
college which is Christ the king Sidcup which means that we don't have to spend
any money. We also have access to the editing suite for which we will use to
add dramatic effects to our short films. The type of production we will be
using is single camera production. There are many ways to go out to get money.
A ways is through dipping into their own savings; this benefits them in the
long term if they produce a massive film that’s loved which would allow a large
profit margin. Another way is through investors investigating money in which
they borrow you money but when you start making a lot they get half there cut
or what they paid you to start up. Ident think I wouldn't need to provide a great sum of money
because most of the materials that I will be using will be provided by my
college to be honest. My only input in money would be to provide food for my
actors and this will come out of my personal savings. The transport is already
established because I and my actors all have the free travel oyster cards
(access to trains & buses) and we have cars too which sorts out transportaution. Or I can
use Kick starter- which is known to be the largest funding platforms for
creative projects, it helps artists find the necessary resources and support
needed to make their idea come to life.
Budget Requirements: The costs to everything I will be using
for my short film will be portrayed below:
Cameras - I will be using a camera no much more than £100-£300.
I have to purchase one camera as imp using a single camera to shoot my 1 min
short film. However in this situlation
I will be able to access a camera for free from college.
Tripod:
this is needed as my short film is going to be a static one meaning it has to
use a tripod to show realism and professionalism which is expected at this
stage in time. The price ranges from
£29.00 -£259.00 depending on how much you are going to spend depending on the
quality you wat your work which is show in the image below.
Lights and microphone - if I were to hire the cost would be
£500 per day to hire a camera man who would sometimes bring their own equipment
and sometimes not. In this case I wouldn't be needing to hire anyone because I
will be shooting my 1min short film myself and with my group.
Editing Suites - These suits can cost £500 per day/hour but
in this case I will be using the editing suite that is provided in college
which also has the specific resources needed in completing my task. I will be
using my editing suite in my college as it is free and because we have been
granted access to do so to make things easier for us.
Talent - the talent will cost £500-700, however I will be
using my colleagues as it’s a short film and I have people around with their
own associated talent at my disposal to use and they won't ask for any pay as
they are friends.
Crew - In order to hire a crew for my 1 min short film it would
usually cost more like£50 and up. For my 1 min short film I will only need to
utilise a minimal amount of people as I want to be able to create a short
realistic idea that I can actually create instead of making.
Transport – is already sorted as we are all students so we
have access to tfl
(transport for London) free Oster (bus, train) so each person would need £10
each for train as you are charged. Are second means of transport that is also
at our disposal is are parent driving us around.
Facility hire - hiring an edit suit to have videos edited
will cost around £550 per day. In this case I will be using my college-editing
suit for free (mac room) where again I have all the needed resources to edit my
short film. I will be using final cut pro x which is an editing software that
will allow me to edit my short film together so it makes sense and so that it
portrays a sense of realism. We are lucky to have an editing suit because we
would have had to pay £550
Time:
Our deadlines are very importanat to us as timing gets us prepared and
organised In order to achieve the objectives set, I must organise a timetable
in advance and inform my crew so that they know when to attend. This will be
done using call sheets which are schedules which tell the filmmakers when they
should be filming and the location they should be filming in. According to
post-production, the date will be organised and everyone will need to be early
so that we can make changes to the footage and simultaneously working at a
moderate pace. It would normally cost £550 for editing in the editing suite or
studio. However, we are using the apple Mac suit in my college to edit our
footage meaning that we don't have to pay a thing which entails that we are
lucky as we are using equipment for free without charge. The procedures – an adl (edit decision list)
would be need later on when editing for the sould purpose of arranging the camera shots into
folders of good and bad shoots too make work easy to acces and so that it can be more organised.
Crew and Personnel:
The production roles that are needed for my 1 minute short
film is that of:
·
Director – script, locartion recce, props
·
Production manager -
·
Camera man/camera Director -
According to the size of my team, there will be a maximum of
three people and they will have their own production roles which consist of the
director, producer, and the production assistant but each person in our group
will support roles others in the form of assistants.
Facilities and Equipment:
In the film industry you would have to pay in order to
transport your equipment it would cost around £1350 if you paid for bikes and
taxis as a form of transport for your equipment (recording eqiwipment, crew).
However, we will be using public transport as it is free as long as we have our
oyster cards.
The props I will be using for my short film is a mask,
someone's wallet showing ID. It usually costs around £500 for props but I
already have some of the the
props needed for my shortfilm,
I will be spending money on props suchhas fake blood, face paint, bed sheets toy bycical, scary doll. I plan to
finish my project before the deadline so we can use the time to deal with the placin of footage in the
editing suite.
Materials:
We will be using royalty-free music for our short film. In
the industry you would have to pay clearance which involves paying money to
whoever owns the song, but we will be using royalty-free music. This is easier
as you don’t have to undergo the process of having to get permission by
contacting the creator of the work you want to borrow. As if this isn't done
you can be fined a nice amount of money for stealing someone’s property/work. I
would have to acquire clearance, in which is the paying for copyrighted
materials to use at my disposal e.g. music tracks, sounds and expressions.
Copyright is a very important law in the world of media as
copy right laws prevent people from stealing your hard work so basically you
are given ownership over t things you created. For example if it was a
painting, a photograph, a poem or a novel, music video, e-portfolio,shortfilm if
you created it, you own it (belongs to you) and it’s the copyright law itself
that assures that ownership hence it means people will need to ask for
permission to use you work when the copy right laws have been enforced.
To be honest this is essential for my short film as it makes
sure that no one can steal my uniqueness and creativeness. If someone does
while the copy right law has been enforced that person would have to pay for
copyright hence they could go jail or be fined a lot of $$$.
The cost of copy
right law is=$114 in pounds= £75.28 or even more (depending).
Contributors:
Talent - the talent will cost £500-700, however I will be
using my colleagues as it’s a short film and I have people around with their
own associated talent at my disposal to use and they won't ask for any pay as
they are friends.
Locations:
We will have 4 locations in total, 2 to be the actual
locations and the other 2 to be there for back up in case of a serious
situation to shoot my 1 minute shortfilm. The locations will be sourced from doing a recce
which is a quick review of the location and pictures (selfies to show proof of
our findings) are taken and permission is required in order to film on that
location. So in summary, the costs are covered by the group so a team effort
(contributing to the location if we have to pay) but its most unlikely as all
we need to do is state that we are students and that we want to shoot in a
certain location.
Codes of Practice and Regulations:
The BBFC is the British board of film classification. They
are a non-profit organisation and they certify films shown in the UK with age ratins e.g. U,PG, 12, 12A, 15, 18
& R18. They do not regulate YouTube because it is worldwide and it is not
just limited to the UK.
Conclusion:
The priorties
for my 1 minute short film is that a
storyboard,script,scriptlining,edl,schedualing,riskassesment is all important
as they are the things that make up my 1 minute short film without them iw ould not be able to
shoot my short film as it is not safe also I would not be handed equipment as
there is no proof of me apply work towards my short film.
