Pop

Justin Bieber - I'll show you

Pop music usually have choreography in them and lip-syncing. this music video is different as it shows the artist in his emotions hence the song starts off by saying and i quote "my life is a movie and everyone watching so lets get to the good parts and pass all the nonsense". this is a different type of music video as it is calm and toned down as it placed in an relaxed environment (location: Iceland). the video is usually dominated with long shots as they are trying to make viewers understand and have a sense of how it feels like.
Rock & metal

Queen – We will rock you

In this music video it portraying the relationship of the band as in the music video the camera only focuses on the the group instead of anything else. It also has lip-syncing in the music video which is very clear but delayed as it is not in sync with the song (looks unreal). The video mainly/only focuses on the band throughout the whole video and the camera shots used is mainly close ups and mid shots but mostly close ups are dominant .

Hip Hop

Ludacris, Usher and David Guetta – Rest of my life

this music video has a fast pace to the track. it also has fast pace editing involved as the song matches the beat at times allowing it to flow making it memorable to want to listen again. in the music video the three artist are all views in it - all of them doing there individual roles.
-usher- singer
-luda- rapper
-guetta-dj
what the video is trying to say is that we should live our life to the fullest and not be so consumed with doing everything right all the time.
R&B

Trey Songz – Touchin, Lovin ft Nicki Minaj

It starts by showing the artist album cover 'Trigga' stating that its now available in which he decided to promote the album he has assigned this song too. (sexualising women) voyeurism is seen in this music video as women are seen and portrayed as tools sexual being. the artist himself is the main start of his video. this music video has a narrative of the artist waking up into a dream where he approaches women that arouse him into wanting to do 'touchin, lovin. lip-syncing is also present in the video. the pace is pretty slow.

How music videos are Monetised

  1. Monetisation
  2. Product Placement
  3. Synergy

  • Monetisation:

Refers to the giving of permission to authorise advertisement to be present in your music videos in which you will be charged for. An example is Youtube, YouTube charges advitiser for the advertisement while they share the fees with you, this allows you to make more money in your pocket. however it has some bad points to it as if you add adverts to your video it's more likely to steal, distract and make your consumers sway away from your video causing you to lose consumers and money.
So if you decide to have adverts present in your music video your likely to make $2 per 1,000 views on YouTube.

examples:

This music video by PSY - Gangnam style went viral due to the song and accompanying music video that gather a huge amount of views. This what you have to do to find out how much the record label he is signed to earned and how much the artist himself earned:
2,646,913,867 divide 1,000 x 2 = 5,293,827.734
(this sum shows how much the Universal music group the label he's was signed to earned from the YouTube views while on the other hand the artist PSY will get 10% of that cut.
This is all because the visual side of the music video is more appreciated more than the actual song as music has become devalued.

In this image it shows an ad (advertising google) that appeared when i started watching the video which like i said will cost $2 per 1,000 views.
BecauseYoutube is worldwide it allows music videos when uploaded to be seen all over the world giving the video a wide/broad audience gaining the music video and the artist more awareness and popularity. Therefore the more known and viral the video goes it makes more money for the record label and the artist gaining more money in there pockets.

  • product placement:

Product Placement is designed to sell and promote the products of the individual companies in which is usually embedded into a music video. Product placement is basically seen everywhere not just in music videos but on TV, billboards, newspapers, magazines etc. Its known as an advertising technique used by companies to insure the promotion of their own products allowing more awareness of that product.
However there is also another type of Product Placement called:

  • Paid Product Placement:

Paid product Placement is when your are given an incentive (money) for you to mention that companies product or brand into your music video, Tv show, film etc...

An example of Product Placement:

In this music video the product placement= is beats which has clearly been placed to advertise the beats pill xl

An example of Paid Product Placement:

In the beginning you have the artist talking about her new sony phone and giving hints to how good it is or some interesting features it has to it.

  • synergy:

Synergy refers to when two or more forces interwind to work together in creating a greater outcome than the individual outcome. so its basically how you can promote linked products across different mediums available.

An example of synergy is Disney's High school musical:

As the film High school musical promotes the sound track which then promotes the DVD which promotes the dolls in which promotes the sequels which promotes the Disney store it's self.

How music videos are Monitised

Method A: Youtube
Method B: Product Placement

Youtube:
There are many ways to monitise a music video, using Youtube is one of them. Youtube is global and world wide, meaning that when a music video is put on there, then anyone can see it.  By placing it on Youtube, it immediately makes the video global and when it gains further popularity, it will become viral.

As the video becomes viral, it makes more money, the more views that the video gets, the more money it gains in profit. If the song has an advert before it, this means that the song will make $2 for every thousand views it gets.

For example, when taking a successful viral music video, such as 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams.

This is the amount of views the video gained.
The artist will only receive 10% of the total earning and the remaining 90% will be for the label that funded the song.

This is also the case for Indie music videos. They are owned and funded by a label and therefore must pay them.

This is not the case for Self Producers, as they have made and funded for the video themselves, they will keep 100% of all earning and profits made.

Product Placement:
Product Placement is another way of broadcasting and advertising/ presenting an artists music video via promotional mediums, these are mediums such as Television, billboards in the street, Youtube (As already mentioned) and also apps on tablets and phone ect.

It is also a way of advertising other products within a music video, for instance, using a brand of something, such as headphones, this advertises the brand and the product, the label may be paid by the companay of the product to use their product in the video.

Monetising Music Videos

Which the birth of the internet and video streaming services, monetising music videos has become even more easier to gain money from videos.
Youtube is one of the key platforms to promote music videos and monetise them. This is because Youtube is a global video streaming platform where things can and have easily go.

Product placement is often used to monetise music videos, this is where big company (such as beats) may pay the artist to have their product in the music video, for example beats headphones is a Miley Cyrus video. This is done because they know that the video will generally bring in big views and it is a good chance to subtly promote their product without being too full on and having to spend mass amounts of money on actual adverts.
It creates more awareness of the product meaning that is not only used in music videos but other media outlets/platforms as well such as news papers, billboards and TV adverts.

In general, monetisation is granting permission for an advertisement to be shown in a music video whether it's a independent or major video. Youtube plays a key factor in this because money can be generated through viewers. For example every 1000 views, equates to $2 if your video has advertisements.

Also annotations are used as a form of pop ups in youtube videos to advertise certain products or events. These are most commonly used to advertise products because they can easily be accessed and directly take you to the actual product.

This is why viral videos are often most successful because they generate views and often have annotations to link them to the artists product, so they have two different sources of income from the video.
An example of this would be Pharrell Happy as it went viral and had 886,126,725 views and also had product placement from beats in the video.

1b) Major artist

Music videos main essence in my opionion is too promote a artists image while it gives consumers a hyper real life experience relationship with that artist. However it is a mechanism used to sell and promote an artist in which it is used to build a relation ship around consumers make them want to see what they want too see.

Major Artist - Miley Cyrus

Image:
Miley Cyrus was the perfect major artist to do as her life perfectly shows her image changing over time as she matures and as her fans mature as well. Miley Cyrus is not just a music icon she is a song writer and actress but she is famously known as disney's sweet heart as in 2005 she was given the lead role in the disney series called Hannah Montana which portrays the lifestyle of a teen living a double life as a normal girl and pop star. The show was a hit record as merchandise and tours were sold out  in record time in which welcomed new deals into her becoming a star. After Hannah Montana Miley sought to distant herself from that sweet girl image and give her fans a new side of her to show she was not just disney's sweet heart ( you could say this is where hyper real life experience comes in as she giving her fans a new side of her that they will have to get used to building and forming a new relationship/bond with fans).  Miley cut her hair short and changed her clothing style to a more edgy look to paint a new image for fans as huge shock was to come to fans hen she dropped a single called 'Wrecking ball' which brought about controversy among some but it technically boosted sales to be honest.
Budget costs and production value:
the production value for this song $30 million budget as it used synergy as the movie promotes the soundtrack which the promotes the artist which then promotes the disney store it's self.
Audience appealing to: the audience the artist miley cyrus

In this music video Miley cyrus is still seen as portraying the disney sweet heart as it shows her being built around the character Hannah Montana.

in this music video you get short clips embedded into the music video from her Hannah Montana movie.

this image is the revealed as a memory of hers as its all blurry then clears up. she is displayed as in this music video as:

  • In Love
  • sweet
  • patient
  • passionate
  • ardent - very enthusiastic

this shows that the morjority of her fans miss the way music videos used to be and how the artist changes along time.

1b) Indie artist.

Music videos main essence in my opionion is too promote a artists image while it gives consumers a hyper real life experience relationship with that artist. However it is a mechanism used to sell and promote an artist in which it is used to build a relation ship around consumers make them want to see what they want too see.

Indie Artist - Cat Power

Charlyn Marie Marshall is a American musician, singer, actress, song-writer, and model. In the past she was in her first band called Cat power but later became a solo artist who stuck with the name. She was invited into the modelling world in the early 2000s for her her "neo grunge" look which caught the fashion industry attention as she was seen as a creative artist in the eyes of designers Marc Jacobs and Nicolas Ghesquiere. Charlyn in 2001 modelled for New York magazine and in October 2006 she was embraced by chanel to be the celebrity face for the jewellery line. this was only possible as she was seen smoking a cigarette outside the Mercer hotel by Karl Lagerfeld who is a german fashion designer in which he saw something in her.

Budget

In terms of the budget i would express that a high budget must have been set as they would of had to pay for location and permission to use corner shops, standing in the middle of streets and most of the money would have been put towards the camera crew, editing, and the food to keep the upkeep of the actors and production team.
There was no product placement or synergy noticed in this music video

Audience

The audience they are aiming at Is more of a young adult  (men) as you have a woman dancing in which will appeal to men more than women but on the other hand the type of music and the tempo of it relates to that of a girly theme. The visuals were very glaring and in your face because of the location used in the music video 'Manhattan' as they have bright lights which is engaging. i would also add that the audience that is targeted could be for younger audiences because there is hip-hop dancing/breakdancing.

Conclusion

In conclusion I conclude that compared to major artists indie artists tend to be less free in their music videos in the sense of having big locations, fancy cars, fancy houses as they operate without the backing funding of an organisation but because they are signed to an indie label it  means that they are free to express their art without having to change their image (hyper-real)  because they are targeting a specific audience . whilst on the other hand, majors would have to change their image over time to suit the audience's preferences. An perfect example is Miley cyrus 'Disney's sweetheart' who changed her image to show audiences that she was growing up and maturing. The perks of being an indie artist is that if your video claims amass of views on YouTube, the indie artist themselves receives a greater share of the ad revenue because you are not paying any money to any company. However an disadvantage is that they have to use money from their own pocket to produce the results of a music video.
