3c (part 2)

3c) Mind map out in groups of 4 – look for similarities and differences. Write a conclusion comparing and assess - ‘How to Design a Suite of Idents” explaining the key requirements for designing a successful/effective Ident as a Youtube Instructional Video. Each student takes 1 aspect.

8) How effective the design of the suite is?

Through, looking at my and my groups examples I'am able to conclude that the effectiveness of a suit of idents design is very important as it allows audiences to be able to gather a sense of understanding about the product being broadcasted at hand. The suites of idents for Sumo.Tv, BBC Three, BBC One, ITV and Film 4 all have a purpose to why their design of there suite of idents is deemed effective. This is because the design is about the concept of understanding each individual suite of idents target audience in order to create a suitable design that will appeal and engage the attention of the audiences your broadcasting to. Furthermore, I noticed that what they all have in common is that all the channels designs are made to suit an audience for example sumo.tv reflects that of an relaxed, funny, silly but humorous which captures their target audience, while like on the other hand, the BBC will reflect themselves through 'Unity' in which has been continuous through out the suite. So the design of ones suite of idents has to engage and appeal to their set target audience as thats who they are trying to appeal to by satisfying there needs and wants. Lastly, the design of an ident is very important because it is the main way in which a company can get their message of the purpose of their ident across to audiences and will be representing the companies image.
The key things you should keep in mind when referring to design are:

  • Tempo
  • Audience interaction
  • Density
  • Information - led or Entertainment - led
  • Space and Time

The design of the ident is key as it allows you to be able to show that you are able to understand your consumers/audiences by reflect your product for them and appealing to there wants and needs in which will lead to brand loyalty.

9) How effective the design of the suite is? (Typography, pace, density of information, brand identity)

I am able to come to a conclusion that an ident has different aspects in which they pin point all their attention into to gather the appeal of their set out target audience i came to this result as to what me and my fellow team members have researched and found out proving that Typography, pace, density of information, and brand identity is recognised in the design process of a suite of idents. Its important that a suit of idents must recognise its audience as this is which they are advertising and selling/marketing their product to, to make consumers want more and be able to distinguish you products brand from others. I have noticed that the suites of idents for Sumo.Tv, BBC Three, BBC One, ITV and Film 4 all have a certain way of appealing to their audience as Sumo.Tv theme is relaxed, funny, silly and played back but they didn't incorporate density of information due to their audience they are appealing to. However, the typography was colourful and joined up which could relate to an young audience also the pace was quite fast as the idents where brief and humours which mainly showed the visual side rather than information due to audience. compared to BBC Three which is focused on young audiences 16-34 year-olds are it's centre of gravity because the typography appeals and is attractive to a vast amount of people allowing them to recognise the product at hand.

So yes, I can strongly agree that Typography, pace, density of information, helps to distinguish the design of an suit of idents allowing  audiences to enjoy their product to their full ability.

Task 3b

What is the theme of the suit of idents?

The theme of this suit of idents is that of a seasonal theme representing christmas. the reason in which i chose this suit of ident is for the main reason behind them being typically appealing to my humour. In the first ident we have a paper cut out family dancing to the background music in which is jingle bells then out of no where they are squashed flat by santa claus foot. In the second ident you have a fairy who is decorating the trees and house and lastly a snowman in preparation for christmas until whilst finishing the snowman the fairy is then shot.In the third ident you have the same fairy who is decorating the trees and house but then enters the house to add gift to the stockings and is then sprayed with a bug spray which caused the fair to disintegrate leaving its bones to fall in the stocking. In the forth ident of the suit, yet again we have the same fairy who is decorating the trees and house and then decorates a robin (bird) by giving it a crown. in which the bird perceives the fairy as food and feeds on the fairy.

How and why does the theme appeal to the viewers? (for example, creating a particular tone to target a particular audience type)

The reason behind why the theme appeals to its viewers is because it's showing stuff related to christmas in which is a yearly practice that we celebrate as a time of togetherness happiness, and love. In the case of sumo.tv they set a particular tone in which is relaxed, playful, unserious, and humorous i said this from what i have seen through the suit of idents. However, this allows consumers to know that the channel is up to date and modern with the latest trends showing what they have to offer to audiences and what they should be expecting.

How have they used the same theme in different ways to create brand loyalty?

Sumo.tv have used the same theme to create brand loyalty by first selecting that they will be offering consumers/viewers a seasonal suit of idents (christmas. Sumo.tv have also used humour to play a huge role in creating brand loyalty as the suit of ident all are funny which also reflect an informal audience as the stuff seen is appeal to a younger audience. so i conclude in saying by sumo.tv offering humour to consumers it acts as brand loyalty as consumers will know what to expect in other existing ident for them to be comedic and funny.

Explain whether, how and why the idents are information-led or entertainment-led?

These idents are that of entertainment-led instead of information-led because they mostly focus on the purpose of selling their image, meaning the ident only broadcasting through it's visuals to get their point across to audiences instead of talking to let audiences understand they use images to tell a story. It's not information-led as the idents are not releasing any information except from the fact that there logo sumo.tv it always slapped on screen with a voice over of someone saying 'Sumo.tv'.

Are the idents intended to be used at a particular time of day?

I express that the first ident from the suit reflects the morning as this ident is the only one of the lot that is featured in the morning. while, on the other hand the other 3 idents are used for night time as they are all set at night time. In addition, to this you could imply that it's because we sleep to wake up to christmas and all its joys. However, then again i feel like the last 3 idents might be shown at night anyway because some of their content through the ident are quiet explicit which might be disturbing for some viewers.(watershed rule- when a channels show should be broadcasted due to certain audiences).

Are the idents intended to be used at a particular time of year?

I think that these idents are used at a particular time of year as it expresses a christmas theme in which is seasonal, which is used for the soul purpose 'christmas'. It is used to show people that the channel is also ready and very much aware of what seasonal event is coming also it allows audiences to get more into a festive spirit, as christmas idents create and allow excitement and happiness.

What does the suit convey about the channels identity - what meaning?

The suit of idents convey that the channels identity is humorous and creative i express this view as idents are supposed to tell you something about a channels identity while on the other hand sumo.tv idents are wild, different and lastly have no relation to it's channel. It also shows audiences what they have to offer to them, that all there idents will be funny, silly and exciting and they will always be entertainment rather than information as audiences will get bored and have short attention spans so sumo.tv gets straight to the point (all idents have been 16 seconds to 30 seconds tops).

Assess - How effective the design of the suit is:

The design of the suit of idents are very effective, as it's Visual Information allows audiences to interpret, negotiate, and make meaning from information presented in the form of  image, extending the meaning of literacy. The design also appeals to its target audience as in all the idents the theme is relaxed, funny, silly in which reflect the audience or say capture there wants and needs. The pace of the idents are quiet fast as the target audience have short attention spans meaning they get bored easily so sumo.tv make it short and snappy to suit consumers also so audiences don't get bored and loose brand loyalty sumo.tv do not incorporate ant information they are mainly entertainment led. The sumo.tv logo is always slammed in the centre of the screen it also is done in a distinctive way that you can always expect.
